Expected futures: The use of expectations in the transition to school
Résumé
This presentation concerns children’s expectations of school and how children understand and give meaning to future contexts. This is done by using the theoretical concepts of socialisation. Socialisation can be described as processes through which people understand and give meaning to their life and gain knowledge of how they are expected to act in different situations. The results show that the children have many expectations of future contexts and that these expectations sometimes are contradictory. The results show different ways for children to construct expectations of the future. Knowledge of the future is gained by generalizing from past experiences, in activities in preschool class with focus on school, and by borrowing experience from others.
