The appropriation of space by residents in geriatric institutions: a qualitative study on the enriched garden in care homes

L’appropriation de l’espace par le résident en institution gériatrique : une étude qualitative sur le jardin enrichi en Ehpad

Résumé

The objective of this qualitative study is to explore the process of appropriation of space by nursing home residents, and to characterise the feeling of being at home by identifing the factors that promote it in comparison with the model described by Fischer. Methods. - Mono-centric qualitative exploratory study based on semi-directed interviews with 12 nursing homes residents with mild Alzheimer's disease. The interviews focused on their appropriation of an enriched garden recently installed in the facility. The participants' verbatims were coded and analysed. Results. - The participants were 88.6 ± 2.8 years old and the Mini Mental Status Examination score was 20.7 ± 1.92. The analysis of the coding of the verbatims revealed concepts related to the appropriation of the enriched garden space by the resident. Aesthetics, conviviality, freedom and activities are determining factors for the feeling of being at home, which are themselves interdependent. Environmental mediators such as memory, competence and weather conditions modulate these interactions with appropriation without being a limiting factor. Discussion. - The results showed that their appropriation process was similar to that described by Fischer. They also clarify the description of this feeling of being at home for a resident in a geriatric institution. This depends on the one hand on the fiertness that the resident feels towards the enriched garden, which is notably sustained by the general aesthetics. The resident's feeling of freedom influe on his or her ability, alone or with others to carry out activities, especially those that allow him or her to leave a trace in the garden.
