What is the right time to get rid of diapers? The controversies about the timing of toilet training in France, Norway and Russia

Résumé

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the official standards of toilet training have considerably changed. For a long time, the toilet training was a matter of early conditioning, now it is supposed to be based on unforced learning in line with the "rhythm of the child". However, the spontaneous abandonment of diapers at the socially desired time is never certain. The communication proposes to study the educational challenges of coping with plural and contradictory standards through the example of toilet training in three different national contexts. Indeed, the advice for parents coming from different sources are often contradictory and the manner of coping with them seems to depend on the social and economic resources of families. The historical, cultural and institutional contexts have also an impact on the choices that parents make. All in all, for parents, the toilet training is a question of affirming their educational choices, while resisting external pressure of institutions, early childhood professionals and that of relatives.
